Understanding Chronic Primary Pain: Families, Medical Systems and Stigma

Panel Discussion

Abstract Description

The ICD-11 pain diagnostic categories were conceived for adults, but have the potential to impact culture and practice in pediatric pain. The stigma attached to pediatric chronic pain is well understood, and historically has not been helped by the absence of well-fitting, non-psychiatric diagnoses for chronic pain. Chronic Primary Pain diagnoses have the potential to be both validating and reassuring. This may have a particular impact on parents who seek answers and are afraid of their children’s pain; validating diagnoses may help parents to become less fearful, more accepting and less protective. More widespread use in the medical system may help to reduce frustrating clinical encounters and ultimately clinician attitudes and stigma.
