Successful rehabilitation of a 12 yo male with chronic knee pain and functional neurologic disorder

Panel Discussion

Abstract Description

Dr. Shulman will review the role of rehabilitation professionals in evaluating and treating youth with chronic pain and co-morbid functional neurologic disorders (FND) through a case presentation of a previously healthy 12-year-old male with chronic knee pain and FND admitted to an intensive interdisciplinary pain treatment program. Similar to the case to be presented by Dr. Stewart, this child was refractory to traditional medical rehabilitation models and developed a 100 degree knee flexion contracture limiting his ability to ambulate and tolerate any tactile input to the extremity. His treatment course within the IIPT program required orthopedic manipulations under sedation, botulinum toxin injections and surgical muscle lengthening to restore function to his lower extremity. Dr. Shulman will define the biopsychosocial case formulation and interdisciplinary collaboration that led to a successful treatment outcome for this child. Specific physical therapy and occupational therapy assessment tools and interventions for the child and family system will be discussed alongside current evidence.
