Refractory chronic knee pain and functional neurological disorder in a 15 yo female
Panel Discussion
Dr. Stewart will review the role of a multi-disciplinary team in evaluating and treating youth with chronic pain and co-morbid functional neurologic disorders (FND). She will focus on psychological treatments using a case presentation of a 15-year-old female with chronic knee pain and FND. Similar to the case to be presented by Dr. Shulman, this child was refractory to traditional medical rehabilitation models and developed a knee flexion contracture limiting her ability to ambulate, tolerate any tactile input to the extremity, and participate in school, leisure, and occupational activities. Her treatment course within the IIPT program was modeled after the case presented by Dr. Shulman, and utilized orthopedic manipulations and intensive interdisciplinary treatment to restore function. Dr. Stewart will present the biopsychosocial case formulation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and potential barriers that contributed to refractory symptoms in the case. Treatment challenges and clinical decision making once traditional evidence-based treatment is refractory will be discussed.
