Harnessing the Power of Digital Health Technologies for Hospitalized Children’s Pain Care. Insights and Recommendations from Experts, Clinicians, and Hospitalized Children & Families

Panel Discussion

Abstract Description

Hospitalized children face inadequately assessed and undertreated pain. Worldwide hospital data demonstrates that as many as three-quarters of pediatric patients report moderate to severe pain. A growing body of literature indicates that hospital electronic medical records (EMRs) and inpatient portal systems can enhance and promote child and family engagement during hospitalization and improve care quality and outcomes. In this panel discussion, I will share findings from two studies in a broad research program focused on the role of hospital-based digital health technologies in children’s pain care. I will share expert recommendations on user-centered, evidence and theory-informed EMR designs that support optimal pain care practices. I will also share the qualitative insights of hospitalized youth and caregivers about their role in using an inpatient portal to support their engagement in pain care during hospitalization.  I will highlight principles underpinning child and family-centered hospital-based technology designs that derive from and connect these studies.
