AVATAR - Development of a virtual reality customized avatar for a multi-platform application to manage pain and anxiety for hospitalized children in hemato-oncology
Symposia
Our objective is to study the feasibility, acceptability and effects of a customized friendly virtual reality avatar, within a multiplatform, on pain and anxiety of children undergoing cancer treatment. Hospitalized children in hemato-oncology from 6 to 17 years are currently being recruited (N=5) as well as their parents. This qualitative design study is using semi-structured child-parents interviews as well as surveys on satisfaction. Qualitative feedback will also be collected from parents using a logbook. We will analyze the verbatim through thematic analysis. Our study follows a co-design approach in art-based research. Children are involved in the game conception by creating their own virtual friend through a drawing. Our data collection is currently undergoing (n=4/5). At this time, preliminary emerging themes are “anxiety effect”, “mood effect” and “lines of improvement”. Surveys on satisfaction have shown so far that children and their parents are satisfied with the intervention and consider that the intervention has a positive effect on controlling the anxiety and the pain associated with the various interventions and procedures done for cancer treatments. Preliminary results show potential for the use of a customized avatar, within a virtual reality platform, for anxiety and pain management of children hospitalized for cancer treatments.
