When A Small System Needed a Big Solution: Experiences of Implementing an Evidence-Based Treatment in a Low-Resource Setting within a Collaborative Clinical Network

Symposia

Abstract Description

Community based hospitals are often stymied by numerous systemic barriers and commonly lack the infrastructure and resources to generate and sustain new health interventions.  Working within a clinical network with institutions that have dedicated resources for intervention development enhances clinical care for rural and underserved patient populations within community-based hospital catchment areas. Moreover, iterative and dynamic evaluation can generate effective adaptations, further expanding access to care. This talk will explore how a collaborative clinical partnership can help community-based hospitals, successfully increase access to evidence-based treatments.  Specifically, this presentation will illustrate how the CAP clinical network partnership informed the adoption, implementation, and sustainability of a psychological intervention for pediatric chronic pain within a community hospital serving a low-resourced population.  Barriers to implementation and quality improvement initiatives will be discussed to highlight the tangible steps taken at this site to successfully deliver this intervention. Further, we will discuss how available network resources were leveraged for greatest impact and the role of administrator and interdepartmental champions across departments.
