Proposed framework for healthcare transition in adolescents and young adults with chronic pain
Panel Discussion
Dr. Murray will briefly describe the first healthcare transition framework for chronic pain, which highlights transition as a complex process involving multiple pathways, outcomes, and stakeholders. This framework is informed by Dr. Murray’s recent mixed-methods research, prior transition models focused on other chronic illness populations, and theoretical and empirical work in pediatric pain. Using this framework, Dr. Murray will highlight promising yet understudied pathways for improving healthcare transition in AYAs with chronic pain, including modifiable socio-contextual (e.g., internalizing/mood disorders, parent protective behaviors) and transition-related processes (e.g., transition readiness, pain acceptance) that can inform transition services, bridge gaps in care, and optimize health outcomes for AYAs with chronic pain.
