Picturing Bravery: The Representation of Needle Pain and Fear Coping Strategies in Children’s Picture books -MO40

Poster Abstract

Abstract Description

Institution: University of Guelph - Ontario, Canada

This abstract falls into the acute pain category. The study described in this abstract summarizes the content of existing children’s books about needles and provides a “snapshot” of the kind of evidence-based information that is presented to young children in relation to needle procedures. Many books included both evidence-based coping strategies as well as some negative aspects (e.g., scary visuals, non-evidence-based strategies, etc.). The study provides insight into gaps that may need to be addressed if this form of education is used as an intervention for children struggling to cope with fear and pain during needle procedures.
