Patient subtyping in juvenile fibromyalgia: the role of multisensory hypersensitivities -TU18

The study aims to investigate whether patients with Juvenile Fibromyalgia (JFM) can be classified into different subtypes based on their non-painful multisensory sensitivities. We used average linkage clustering on validated measures of multisensory hypersensitivity in daily life completed by 43 JFM girls and 39 healthy girls. The results revealed two separate patient subgroups (high vs. low multisensory hypersensitivities). The high multisensory hypersensitivities subgroup had more severe core disease-related symptoms, but did not differ in affect-related or coping measures compared to the low multisensory hypersensitivities group, suggesting the possibility of two JFM patient subtypes regarding their non-painful sensory sensitivities, which may have implications towards severity of core disease symptoms without compromising affective/cognitive regulation processes. The study highlights the potential role of patient subtyping to further understand the heterogeneity of disease mechanisms and continue working on improving our understanding of the different contributing factors to JFM pathophysiology.
