Inpatient Portals for Paediatric Pain Care: Perspectives of Primary Caregivers and Youth -MO6

Poster Abstract

Abstract Description

Institution: The University of Melbourne, Australia - Victoria , Australia

Hospitalized children experience pain as part of their condition, diagnostics and treatment, which has consistently been reported as poorly assessed and undertreated [1, 2].  Exposure to undertreated pain is associated with adverse outcomes that impact children, their families, health services, and communities [3]. Engaging children and families in care can improve care quality and safety. Patient portals integrated with hospital electronic medical/health records [EMR/EHR] can improve child and family engagement, outcomes and satisfaction during hospitalization [4]. However, existing studies have not considered the unique focus of hospital-based portals in pediatric pain care. As part of a broader research program, the perspectives of primary caregivers (PCGs) of hospitalized children and hospitalized youth about their potential role using an inpatient portal to support their engagement in pain care during hospitalization were explored.

Hospitalized children experience pain that is inadequately assessed, undertreated and associated with wide-reaching adverse outcomes. Child and family engagement in care improves care quality and safety. Involving children and families in pain care via a patient portal linked to hospital electronic medical records could improve engagement, satisfaction and outcomes for hospitalized children and families. This study examined perspectives of primary caregivers of hospitalized children and of hospitalized youth from a single tertiary pediatric setting about using an inpatient portal for pain care.
