Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) occur in up to 45% of U.S. youth presenting in tertiary care settings. FGID includes multiple gastrointestinal pain-related conditions of which the symptoms cannot be fully attributed to an identified medical/organic cause. Observers tend to react with uncertainty and confusion to people whose pain is not clearly medically understood. As a result, children with FGID are prone to the stigmatizing reactions of others. This study sought to determine whether stigmatization (experienced as felt stigma) is associated with the intensity of abdominal pain reported by children with FGID above and beyond other biopsychosocial factors thought to contribute to pain in this population.
